I just remember my days holding up a bottle of Revlon Colorstay to my face in harsh Target lighting and shrugging and picking up what seemed like the right-ish color and going with it. I agree with a lot that was said here, but something else I think is interesting about this complaint is how, based on my watching of her, she doesn't really go for the full-coverage complexion products with her looks, so it's not like she's even the main candidate for needing a perfect shade match.Īs a pale person as well, I feel like people have gotten a little too picky and privileged when it comes to getting an exactly correct shade in complexion products. And I disagree that she feels the “weight of the world”- she uses current events as a way to justify her spending habits to her audience while still appearing woke - all while also using a lot of AAVE slang. She’s obviously intelligent, and could use her education and interesting influencer expertise to get a well-paying copywriting job at an agency, a tech company or even a cosmetics company. She’s a highly educated 37-year-old living the life of a 22-year-old recent arts graduate who refuses to “sell out.” Regardless of how much she talks about poetry, and how often she speaks in grammatically correct but awkward sentences, her passions clearly lie in having nice things and living a comfortable life. But as time has gone she’s gotten incredibly pretentious and I find her to be really immature. I used to love Hannah’s channel because we have similar tastes, especially in fashion. She's always done the romanticizing but there seems to be this new grandiose self-importance that wasn't there before. Maybe I'm expecting too much? What are your thoughts? I do question if the depth of her relationship with "beautiful things" (material goods) and the current level of romanticizing her personal thoughts is rooted in being a fan of herself. She's usually quite thoughtful and informed. The whole thing just felt like a NLOG approach to self-centeredness which is disappointing, considering that Hannah has stated many times that she is very affected by the "weight of the world" and issues faced by POC in this country. This does NOT take away or from the challenges of having an olive undertone - I am fully informed and aware on that front and know that even within the olive undertone, there is a spectrum between green and gray that presents more obstances. while I'm very aware that it can be quite difficult for her sometimes to find shade matches, she has the privilege of being able to review ones that do differ but are close enough to not be noticeably distracting. It was when Hannah was mentioning her pale skin dilemma when I noticed ironically that the "fair cool" shade in the Hourglass looked exactly the same as her skin in that very moment. I’ll try also to comment on whether I would be intrigued enough by the formula to consider reviewing it or buying it if I didn’t have a skin tone that is SO rarely catered to in the makeup world."įollowing this, not only does she mention new foundation releases from both RMS Beauty and Hourglass (while completely glossing over that they are two brands with noted pasts of racist behavior and non-inclusivity for POC complexions) but continues to heavily focus on for every foundation/skin tint release if they could possibly include a shade "even remotely" light enough for her and ignores how little shades there are in them for black complexions. “I’m also going to comment on what I might be interested in trying if I didn’t have such specific and unusual needs - according to the beauty industry - when it comes to shade.Īre they going to have anything even remotely close to my skin tone, which is very pale, desaturated, neutral olive. She immediately prefaces this by stating: I was watching Hannah Louise Poston's most recent video giving her thoughts on new makeup releases and noticed that there was an even larger focus on new complexion products - which makes sense as she has been able to review a large amount of them in the past year.
